What is Metacognition?

Metacognition is a term used by Psychologists to describe the act of monitoring our own thoughts. They have found that this talent or ability varies remarkably from person to person. It is generally a very useful quality to have. Being aware of our own mind, how well it is operating, and what kind of biases it may have, allow us to make better decisions. Lets say you have an important presentation, interview, or exam coming up. You have been prepping for the last 3 hours, trying to memorise all the important details you'll need. You might think that is enough to cover what you need to know. Good metacognition will allow you to be aware of how effectively you were absorbing that information. Were you focused the whole time, or did you spend long periods fantasising about your next holiday?
